Just when I thought I’d seen all there was to see in tile, they come out with something else. I recently met with Nick Casiero, a rep that brought in a new product that installs like tile and is made with real wood. The line is called Len Dilegno and is part of the wood veneer company Gierre Tranciati SpA of Italy. The company is both ISO 9001 and FSC certified.

Previous to this product, the only option of incorporating wood into wet environments was to use porcelain tile that mimics wood. The secret behind this real wood tile is the multiple layers of wood veneer stratified and mounted on a recyclable composite backing. This construction allows the tile to be used in any interior environment, including showers. The product comes in a wide variety of formats: as small as 1”x1” up to 2’x12’ long in both 8mm and 10mm thicknesses. The construction is ideal for sound absorption, heat insulation and radiant floors. It can be installed with gaps between which can be filled with grout for wet areas or butted against each other for dry areas. The tiles come in several species and stains and are finished with a water based varnish.

So although I was skeptical when I first heard the words “something you’ve never seen before in tile”, I have to admit I was thoroughly impressed. Now I only need to find the right client…
